Question of the Week

This week’s question concerns the use of location-based mobile technologies to target consumers. For example, you open your Internet browser and your local weather, area news, and a list of local businesses are already present on the page without any prompting. Or you’re walking down the street and your mobile handheld device pinpoints local attractions that may be of interest to you. While these can be seen as rather innocuous uses of the data collected about your location, there is the potential for misuse of the information. Because of this potential, Congress added location-based mobile targeting to the list of privacy concerns discussed at a recent hearing about “The Collection And Use Of Location Information For Commercial Purposes.”

What do you think? Do location-based mobile technologies infringe on one’s privacy?
